Welcoming Message

The Technical Committee of Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering (TC4) of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), the Hellenic Scientific Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, are all very pleased to invite you to join us for the 4th International Conference on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, hosted in Thessaloniki on June 25-28, 2007.
Following in the footsteps of the three previous successful conferences in Tokyo, Lisbon and Berkeley, we have committed ourselves to delivering a specialized and well-focused conference of the highest scientific and technical standards; all this in a vibrant, friendly city known for its beauty, its warm hospitality and a history spanning more than 2000 years.

We are working hard to organize the conference around numerous state-of-the-art topics. In Thessaloniki, earthquake and geotechnical engineers, geologists and seismologists from all over the world will find an excellent forum for sharing and discussing the most recent advances in soil dynamics, earthquake and geotechnical engineering, as well as their interaction with geology and engineering seismology. Invited keynote lecturers will discuss recent and ongoing developments, addressing unresolved issues and projecting ideas for the future, while the 2nd Ishihara Lecture will offer a comprehensive overview of the progress achieved to date in soil dynamics and geotechnical earthquake engineering. More than 450 papers from 45 countries have been finally accepted for publication after thorough review and the will be presented and discussed in oral and poster sessions. Workshops and round table discussions on selected topics of particular engineering and societal interest will help broaden the horizons of the earthquake and geotechnical engineering community and to reinforce cooperation links.

A varied and colourful schedule of activities will be available to participants and accompanying persons before, during and after the conference. This will allow you to make the most of your time here, experiencing the cultural riches, tourist attractions and natural beauty of Greece in general and Thessaloniki in particular: a city where everything is within walking distance. You will have the chance to savour the renowned Greek hospitality, the pleasant weather and exquisite food, the beautiful nearby beaches and mountains. In a place where you find history around every corner, the unique archaeological sites and cultural events will certainly give you the opportunity to combine professional interests with a taste of the Greek way of life.

We are sure that you will find participation in 4ICEGE professionally rewarding, scientifically stimulating and at the same time personally enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming you to Thessaloniki in June 2007.
