Workshop 3
Recent advances in Codes
Thursday 28/6

Scope

The Organizing Committee of the 4th International Conference on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering has decided to organize a workshop on "Recent advances in Codes" which will be held the fourth day of the conference.

The aim of this workshop is to present and discuss the state of the art in geotechnical earthquake engineering codes, to highlight the problems in engineering applications and to propose possible future improvements to existing codes.

A 15mn presentation by an invited lecturer to present the status of earthquake geotechnical codes in his region. These presentations will be followed by examples of codes application related to few well specified practical engineering projects. These projects have been defined by the Organizing Committee of the workshop and have been distributed in advance to invited design offices, spread all around the world. These design offices were asked to develop their own design according to their own codes and to send their contributions a few weeks before the workshop. The Committee will organize the comparisons and discussions during the workshop and possibly compare the answers to designs performed with more advanced state of the art tools and techniques. At this stage, the three benchmark problems are related to Earth Retaining Structures, Liquefaction analyses for Port Structures and Buildings, Piled Foundations for Buildings. Other benchmark problems could be also defined.

The designers that have accepted to participate in the benchmark are invited to take an active part to the workshop. The benchmark problems will be posted on the Conference web site few weeks before the event so that any participant willing to attend the workshop can have knowledge of the topics to be discussed. It is the intention of the Committee to publish the results of the workshop after the conference.

Other topics concerning important topics of earthquake geotechnical codes used in engineering practice could be also discussed in the workshop.
